Leamington Spa
The Project
General Motors (GM) is renowned for pioneering innovations and pushing the limits of transportation and technology. After closing its Coventry studio over a decade ago, GM wanted to re-establish a presence in Europe by opening a state-of-the-art creative studio in Leamington Spa known as General Motors Advanced Design Europe (GMADE).
The Brief
GM needed an adaptable workspace that would facilitate design collaboration, communication and productivity, whilst creating an environment that would inspire their teams to imagine designs that would influence the automotive world and lead the market. They required a turn-key solution, with easy-to-use control systems and a bespoke cutting-edge mobile display for multifaceted design working.
The Solution
Opening in 2024, the Design Centre features an open-plan design floor with a Presentation Room, four meeting rooms, a Reception area, and a bespoke LED mobile display trolley designed by WL for flexibility. At its core, a 9.7m x 2.7m Samsung IWA display allows staff to showcase designs in-house or collaborate via video conferencing.
It functions as either two 16:9, 4K displays or a single 32:9 display, large enough for 1:1 scale car renders. Multi-functional meeting rooms, equipped with Samsung professional displays, support seamless collaboration. A custom 6.5m-wide motorised LED display trolley, built with 72 high-definition Samsung IWA 1.2 LED tiles, ensures exceptional clarity and adaptability. This all-in-one solution integrates a built-in rack, processors, network connectivity, speakers, DSP, and plug-in laptop connections, all controlled via iPad with a Crestron system for efficient operation.
